National Heritage Day

posted by Spirit of the Eagle

Well just last month, they signed into law that today be named National Heritage Day.

Excuse me if I find this insulting, since it is Thanksgiving (known by many Natives as UnHappy NoThanksTaking Day), and it marks the beginning of the soon to be all out battle for land between the “white” settlers and the Natives. It’s like saying THANKS for letting us beat you down and rip apart your lives all those years ago. We don’t really care that they will never be the same again.

There were hardly any celebrations expected because the legislation was only just passed last month. Doesn’t give you a whole lot of time to plan anything, now does it?

Native American Heritage Activities

posted by Spirit of the Eagle

It’s Native American Heritage month. By all accounts, there is no telling what the last real ruling on how long this period of time really lasts.

I found some great quizzes that will test your knowledge on the history of Indians. Some real brain teasers in there. Check them out.

Nanticoke Lenni Lenape Powwow

posted by Spirit of the Eagle

Next weekend is our annual PowWow. I am planning to attend at least one of those days, if not both. I went the year before last and am so glad to be able to go again this year. My son will remember more and more as the years go on. This year, I am hoping that he will be able to do a project about it for homeschool.

In a few years, he will be ready to get his name as I have received mine. This year’s powwow should be awesome, as always. I am so ready! Here is a slideshow from the last time we went:

Wrapping up the Month

posted by Spirit of the Eagle

Thank you for sticking with me for the ten days of National Native Heritage Month. I appreciate that you learned with me these last two weeks. I suggest you go back through for a refresher course and imprint the facts on your memory. It’s awesome to learn about other cultures. This one is fundamental as it is the foundation of America.

God bless!

The Library of Congress celebrates NAHM

posted by Spirit of the Eagle

The Library of Congress has set up this beautiful site with information, images, and much more about the Native peoples. Their theme for this month: Guiding Our Destiny with Hertiage and Traditions and a Native Prescription: Balancing Mind, Body, and Spirit. I think the theme is a magnificent one.

Native Heritage, rich in diversity

posted by Spirit of the Eagle

There are so many types of Native across the USA. I want to focus on the Black Native Americans. They have been ridiculed and shafted by their own people. Why? Because even in Native culture there is discrimination and racism.

There is so much more information out there about these forgotten Natives. One tribe in the west even ousted the freedmen natives from their ranks in the past year. They didn’t want to acknowledge their heritage and how it is entwined with their own. After all that the Native peoples have been through, you would think they would leave these freedmen natives alone. It just goes to show you that even though we are all different across all the cultures of people, many of us are crossculturally the same.
